Before enslavement, our ancestors lived in deep reciprocity with the Earth. We tended our landscapes, honored the sacred spirits of nature, served as shamans, and lived off the land.

Long before "permaculture" had a name, our ancestors were already practicing its deepest truths. As Leah Penniman writes in Black Earth Wisdom, polycultures are ‘mixtures of several mutually supportive species planted together, which help to conserve soil fertility, reduce pest pressure, and increase agrobiodiversity.’ This is not a new idea. It is an old one, remembered.

The Hausa farmers of Nigeria carried this wisdom in their hands, engineering well over a hundred distinct crop pairings, including grains, legumes, and root vegetables rising together on ridged, no-till beds, each plant in conversation with the next. This is the root system beneath what the modern world calls "permaculture", a movement built on Black agrarian genius, even when that lineage goes unnamed. Penniman reminds us: the technology was never new. Only the credit was missing.
